Is this possible? I am going to take off the big ring, and put a bash guard on, but I don't have to tool to hold the "nuts" while removing the allen bots. Any suggestions?

Yes... Use your finger to hold it so it doesn't move. That's it. You don't really need a special tool. Do the same when putting it on. If you put just a tiny bit of grease on the flat part of the head and on the threads it will spin on easier and tighten with out spinning on your fingers. Done it many times.

I've also used a putty knife to press into the slots. After a while I just spent the $5 and got the tool. Much easier.

Even with grease on the threads I often have a hard time getting them to loosen or tighten completely. I wish they'd make the nut with a hex pattern so you could crank with an allen wrench from both sides. I usually use a screwdriver. I tried the tool as well, but it doesn't work well when the nut has a solid core because the tool has a bit that sticks out and contacts the nut. Filing it down helped, but the screwdriver works better for me.

i've had mixed results. i just hunted around for something wide enough to hold it when only half of them would tighten on their own.

See, I can't even figure out how to swap a chain ring, yet even I can convert to tubeless.
