I've got a question?
How often do you service your casette body or freehub?

Here's my story.
3 years ago I bought a Mavic wheelset. Not a high end or
a cheep one. It was a $600 wheelset, I believe. Anyhow,
end of last July it broke. The shop sent it to mavic and
they put on a new hub and respoked it for $125.
I thought it was a good deal. Then 3 weeks ago, chasing
RHS around Calaveras, one of the pawls broke.
The shop sent it to mavic, they inspected it and said
they weren't going to warranty it because, "maybe I was overusing
the wheel", and that it should have been serviced 3 times between
july and april. Also when asked if the pawl broke because of the
"lack of service" they said no.

Does eveyone out there service their hubs every 3 months??????????

Any suggestion on wheelsets?
Tubeless and not light, I need a beefy set?

Clyde

I don't ever recal servicing my hubs (why does that sound dirty?) and I beat the crap out of my bikes.

Go with a custom set.. :bang:
Mavic EX823 and Stan's Flows (with tape and valves) are tubeless and pretty beefy.
I had a set built by Chad at Red Barn Bicycles (Hope Pro II's and Mavic En321 Hoops) shipped to the house for 450. They are in Montana though.

You can call or email them. The build process was excellent. He will make some recommendations based on you're size, type of riding, price point, etc.. He may also have some stuff already built too. If I remember right, He doesn't charge labor if buying a wheelset. Satisfaction Gauranteed!

I have a pair of Deemax that I have been using for the last past 4 years. Almost once a year, I open the rear hub and clean and lube the pals and spring and that is that. So far so good. I am not the lightest guy around here ( 225 lbs ) or maybe I don't ride often. That is why they are lasting this long.

Overall, I have been staisfied with their performance so far.

As far as EX823 wheels, I agree with 02bullit, they are tough and very strong. My set is laced to Shimano Saint. I think this is a pretty bullet proof set. I bought them from Price point at a great price. I am sure they still have them if you are interested.

I have a set of Mavic middle of the road too. I was told if you are riding 2-3 times a week that they should be serviced every 3-4 months. The service is something that you can do yourself with a little practice. It usually involves removing the free hub body, cleaning the dirt out of it, and re-lubing the paws with a light weight grease. You free hub body will last anywhere from 1-3 years before it needs to be replaced. That replacement runs about 50-80 bucks.

When I asked the shop mech (trusted person) why they require so much maintenance over other wheel sets, he laughed and stated the following "Hey, what do you want? They're French! Can you name a French car that doesn't need continual maintenance?"

He made his point. So now I know how to service my free hub now. Geese, at this rate I may just set up my own shop in the garage. Oh, wait. I did that. But just for me. :D

Any luck with the wheel search?
On another note, Hopes and Kings are really easy to service. Cleaning and lubing are a cinch, but changing bearings and such requires special tools. The basic cleaning and lubing should keep you rolling happy for quite a while.
