I've a penny held in a pair of pliers works just fine.

Classic!

Save the dough on buying the special tool and get chainring bolts with allen sockets on both sides. 'Cuz you ain't gonna have the special tool (or pliers and a penny) on the trail with you.

Truvative makes chainring bolts with two different hex nut sizes.

The only problem with these is that a typical multitool only lets you use one hex wrench at a time. Don't ask me how I know that one. At least when they loosen a bit on the trail you can get them pretty tight with one wrench on the outside and your fingers on the inside.

If you need the tool, contact me. You may need the longer bolts depending on the thickness of your bash.
