I've thought about trying a fixie, but the rational part of my brain says "NOOOO!". ;-)

Whenever I'm riding my SS up a rocky spot and I clock my pedals to avoid a pedal strike, I'm glad I didn't see the fixie idea through. I have no idea how to get a fixie over a rock garden without the pogo-stick launch of a pedal strike.

PQ canyon would probably be OK other than maybe one or two spots along bridges. North hodges likewise other than a couple of small spots. But anywhere else in SD would probably be a bit too OTB for me.

Given air is 78% nitrogen, should be easy to find on the trail should your Stan's leak.

As for a belt-drive fixie - 1) I'll donate some brakes 2) Belt drive cogs are splined to fit like a cassette, therefore no-fixie belt drive without some major work (not to mention the previously mentioned frame limitations.

I did see a cog on some fixie blog ( http://urbanvelo.org/london-fixie-bike-cog/ ) that was made to bolt onto a standard disk 6-bolt pattern front hub, so you can use a standard disk front wheel as a fixie rear wheel. I have a disk wheel that needs bearings you can have (Real hub). Or you can buy my Monogog with the BMX-spaced rear flip-flop hub so you could do either.

why not run Vbrakes...they are light, there is rotational weight to any wheels...and you can actually go downhill, unless youre the ish at DH I can only imagine walking down the hill.....

Regarding the combination of nitrogen and Stan's, I wasn't worried about leaks, I was worried about explosions. And thanks for your offer to donate brakes, but the whole idea was to go totally pure on this thing.

Nitrogen is an inert gas. You don't need to worry about it reacting with anything inside of the MTB tire.

For the volumes involved, 100% nitrogen vs. 100% air will produce a very insignificant change in weight. The difference is something like 1oz for a race car tire. For a MTB tire, we're talking grams. You'd be better off shaving all the knobbies from the tire. But, if you really wanted to go crazy, consider Helium. Better yet, fill it up with nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and then we can all have a party sucking on your tires...

I haven't heard of a Darwin award -- does that come with money like a MacAthur Foundation award or a Nobel prize?

I use helium to make the bike lighter.

Sweet -- did I mention I was building this bike for Sascha Baron Cohen?

Yeah, he said he wanted a bamboo frame and wooden rims, but I told him that would be ridiculous.
