Within the last couple months shifting into bigger rings on my front derailleur has become very difficult. The amount of force needed to push the thumb lever becomes pretty painful after awhile, so much so that I started using my right hand to shift the front derailleur

Ive had the bike since 07 so I figure its time to change the cables and housing. Is there any maintenance I could do on the actual shifter itself ?

also are the x9 shifters merely lighter than the x7 or do they actually function better?

From what I learned when I was shopping there isnt that much of a difference between x9 and x7.

Try using both, then you'll see why most folks are running x9. Better leverage, immediate shifts.

the X9 has more leverage........
