Yep, that is what I was trying to show, and the thin links ;-)

I'm thinking with that kind of wear you WILL need to change out your chain, cassette and all your rings. How long has that chain been on there?

Whoa, now. That IS a bit compulsive. If you change your chain out about every 4 months - which is about what I aim for - there is no need to change out your cassette along with it.

Oh I gave it up from the onset...said I was OCD  Moreover, 4 months of riding puts me around 2500 miles. I'm not looking to set records on component longevity. More to the point, I will have received my dollars worth (hopefully) and move on to fresh drive train components. To be brutally honest, I always find some measurable amount of wear/damage that will sway me from using the old cassette with a new chain.

-just me.

So your averaging 150+ miles a week? Off road?

The weekly goal is 150 per week. There is a mix of pavement in there as I cycle to work 5 days a week...I get to catch two sections of Tecolote Canyon on the way home to make the commute a little less redundant. Other than that, I grab 3-4 rec rides a week.

Awesome. Singletrackmitch, if you don't mind, if you're running xtr rear cogsets, please PM me every 4 months when you're discarding them and I'd be happy to help put some extra miles on them. Free pickup service is included! :D

You are toast. Just for grins, toss a new chain on there and see how far you fly over the handlebars as it skips off both your front chainrings and rear cassette.

Or, run by singletrackmitch's in the dead of night and pilfer his trash can!

Rifle my trashcan? Be careful...if you find the one chuck full of sram parts, last years porn, half eaten ribeyes, and half empty bottles of single malt scotch...thats my neighbors. Mine is chuck full of unsavory diapers, soured breast milk, and slightly worn XT parts.

+1 more on the chain gauge.

personally, i usually dont replace stuff until its broken or cant do what it needs to correctly anymore. as far as driveline i figure if its shifting and pedaling fine you should be ok. watch out for those hollow pin chains, theyre a pita if you snap one on the trail.

A few peeps I know buy 3 chains at once and rotate them out about once a month. It makes your chain, cogs and chainrings last longer.

That's what most peeps I know do.

That is how I got to this situation...my technique was clean, lube, and don't fix if it isn't broken. I wonder if the money I saved in new chains would cover the cost of new gears. But I think I was lucky the thing didn't break in several locations deep in Noble.
