Hi all,

My front wheel wobbles slightly and I think it is my hub that is loose. I took the wheel off and re-tightened the QR but it still wobbles. How does one go about adjusting or tightening a hub?

Thanks for your input!

FP

I only know how to adjust cone hubs, not the new-fangled MTB hubs. Sorry.

You do need to adjust the "cones." Depending on the brand hubs you have, this may be done differently. With King hubs, you need two 5mm hex wrenches to work the cone pieces in to a reasonable fit. With others you can use specific wrenches or a couple monkey wrenches to delicately tighten. If it's Shimano you can probably throw 'em in the trash.

But honestly I'd check with the hub manufacturer's manual to make sure you don't miss anything. If you don't have it, they're almost always online.

While you're doing this you should take it apart, clean and regrease all appropriate areas. Good thing to do no matter what part is being serviced!

Sorry!

Sheldon Brown's website has awesome tips on how to adjust a cone hub (sheldonbrown.com). My Shimano road hubs are easy to figure out, but I can't see how to adjust the Ringle hubs on my MTB.

Edit: depending on how they adjust, you might need cone wrenches. They have to be very thin to fit so close together. You have to hold one nut and tighen the other one against it. Kinda like tightening a threaded headset.

You tube to the rescue!

You should be able to adjust those. Get the cone wrenches and just do it. After that, true the wheel for roundness and straightness, and it will feel like new wheel.
