I was originally planning on buying a wheelset from bicycle wheel warehouse - Pure XCR wheels or DT 4.2s along with BWW hubs. They got great reviews on MTBR, but none of them have been riding on the wheels/hubs only for a few months.

I was talking with Larry and he happen to have some tubeless rims and gave me the idea of buying some hubs to go with his rims. Now the question is Chris King or Hope? I've done research but would like to have something concrete to point me in either direction.

PogO, I don't think you can go wrong with either choice. Warning, they are both noisy hubs. I like the noise actually. It replaces a bear bell for me. I have Hope IIs and have had no problems for over a year. One important thing, make sure the hubs you get can accomodate the skewer size your running; i.e., standard or 9 mm, 15 mm or 20 mm.

I purchased Hope wheels complete with DT 4.2's from Wiggle.com super cheap. But I got what I paid for. The hubs are the old style or a cheaper production version of the PRO II's. The engagement sucks. I also folded the rear dt 4.2 on my first ride at ATT. In fairness that was rider failure I'm sure. I learned my lesson on Internet purchases. I have an old king rear hub, loud as hell but great engagement and never a problem. If I had the money and the choice I would go with Kings. US company and they have great business and environmental practices. I asked this question about headsets awhile ago and got some great responses about King and I'm now a believer. Good luck ......

Chris Kings are more expensive than almost anything. Whether or not it's worth the money it's up to you to decide.

Exactly...it is worth it to put more money in the rear than the front, but I've never had problems with any rear hub I've ever owned. Most hubs have replaceable cartridge bearings anyways so they can be maintained easily and economically.

hey foo

the hope pro II hubs are suppose to be really good. costly too. not as much as the Kings though. are you going to push the hubs and rim that much?

check the wheels on my stumpy, after 2 years of treating it like crap the front has a small wobble now.

but i just got that wheel you picked up for me. 1 lb lighter! i am going to fly past you up hill now. sandbagger

something no one mentioned is that Hope pro II can go 20mm and QR all in one front hub, you just need to buy the cups for what you ride...this may seem a small point but if you are keeping the hubs for a long time the fact that you can change them from bike to bike makes it a pretty handy thing to have... Ive had both and they seem to ride the same, I'm a big time spinner though so engagement is a rare thing when you spin(grind out, without stopping) to climb.. in the end I liked the versatility of the Hope hubs and sold my King Hubs...hope this helps.

Throwing another wrench into the works... if you're willing to pay for Kings, why not go for DT Swiss?
