Building up a medium Chumba Evo and need to pickup a used fork, just looking for some helpful info.
I dont hit anything more than a 2' or 3' drop and barely jump enough to slide a piece of paper under my tires. Have gone bigger but only by accident. So a mid range as far as quality goes is ok. I just dont want to spend money on a POS ya know? Looking for something in the 5" - 6" range around $300. I know the Fox Talas seems to be "THE" fork from what I read but they seem to go fast when at a decent price. I had a Marzocchi Bomber 66 on the kona and liked the lock out feature for climbing. What other forks are there that are a decent fork for all mountain use that have some travel adjustability or lock out feature? I know I see alot of other names but I dont want to trust MTBR on which are good and which arent. Seems like most reviews are people saying what they have is the best stuff ever lol.
Rockshock appears to be the Walmart special brand or do they have some decent stuff as well? Should I just be patient and wait for a Talas that I can choke the price down?

thanks in advance for your help

I wouldnt consider rock shox walmart...they do seem to have a lot of forks, some decent some not.
I'm a full on fan of Fox...yep, I use Fox, forx and shox. Ive had rock shox, and manitou, heard horror stories from almost everyone thats run marzocci.
I think the 36 talas or 36 vanilla would pair really well with the Evo frame.

Rockshox is definitely not a walmart brand. They do have a lot more low end forks than other companies but their high end stuff is right up there.

I've had a Rockshox Pike Team on my heckler for 4 yrs now. I was sold on it as a single crown boxxer, which has always been my fork of choice for a DH bike. Its simple, functional, reliable, and consistent. I've had no issues whatsoever, in fact I've never even had to change the oil or seals.

Its a coil fork so its very smooth through the travel. It also has a 20mm through axle making it stiff. I can adjust travel anywhere from 3-5" with a few turns of a knob, and the compression rate is the same in any setting. A lot of other travel adjust forks only adjust to specific travel increments (like 90/110/130mm) and when set at less than full travel the compression starts at a higher rate.

It may not be the strongest, lightest, or smoothest fork but I think it is one of the most versatile forks out there - great for all-round riding that includes everything from XC to AM to FR and light DH. And its a more reasonable price than Fox.

The 20mm thru axle may be more than you need or want but they do have other models with standard QR. Then main feature you want is the travel adjust. It makes climbing much easier and more comfortable. I'm sure Fox makes a great fork but I think this one is a better value overall.

A. Rock Shox is not a "Wal-Mart" brand. Sure, they have some low end stuff but that is simply so they can have more market share.
B. You can't go wrong with a Lyrik or a 36 fork. They are both top of the game as far as 6" forks go. If I had to choose one, I would go with the Lyrik.

This is what I should be looking for. Simple, functional, reliable, and consistent. Thanks for the insight and help putting my upgradeitis in check.

Note to self: rockshox is not a wal mart brand
