Copper Thief Electrocuted

A Roseville man is dead after what Sacramento police believe was an attempt to steal copper.
By KFBK's Tim Lantz
Wednesday, February 16, 2011

Listen to the report

After air patrol officers spotted an electrical explosion around 10:30 last night, officers on the ground responded to a sports field on Park Road near Auburn Blvd. There they found a man who had attempted to tamper with a SMUD power box and cut through a high voltage line with bolt cutters.

Sacramento Police Sgt. Norm Leong says the man died a short time later at Mercy San Juan Hospital.

A SMUD crew was sent to scene to make repairs.

Reportedly there were thousands of dollars worth of damage, but a SMUD spokesman was unable to confirm that information. He did say there was no loss of power in the area where the man was electrocuted.

Were any charges filed?
On what grounds?
Wonder if he put up any resistance...
He could probably beat the rap if he hired some high-voltage lawyer...
But judging by his current condition (dead) I guess these are moot points.

They say he used a bolt-cutter? Yeah, he got a bolt alright - a bolt of lightning.

Love those Darwin awards :bang:

That's an electrifying story, which probably explains why it's making the circuit. Not to excuse this guy's stupidity, but I heard he was wired.

Alternate headline: "Copper thief gets greedy, grabs handful of Joules."

The article doesn't list his profession, but I'd guess he was a conductor.

Watt's that you say? He was so positive in cutting the right wire that he forgot about the negative reality of his consequences. In turn, he shorted himself of being properly inducted into Darwin Hall of Fame. Such a shame, as this man really had an exciting life a head of him, but was stripped of his freely charged lifestyle. We're all stunned, but all we can do now is pay ohmage to this earthly man.

He loved listening to AC/DC and drove a Tesla... he generated excitement wherever he went... he was in a phase of his life where he could have rectified his bad behavior, but his life went down the tube anyway. The last movie he watched was the Transformers.
