Hey DTers,
I'm going to be visiting Maui and Oahu later this summer. Looking for leads on trails and rental shops or tours to check out what Hawaii dirt is like.

I travel to Hawaii about 6 times a year for business and have looked into this plus this has been discussed a couple of times before. If it was me on vacation ( and others have the same responses before) I would forget MTB'ing over there. Nothing really epic plus you're in Hawaii man! Do something you can't do/see over here. Relax, toss back a couple cold ones on the beach. Enjoy

TranceX, if you don't agree with that advice, there are several trip reports already below your question, and a quick Google search turns up rental shops. Have a great vacation either way!

If you were to go riding in Hawaii do it on Maui. The Leeward side on Oahu is where most all the people are and never go way north on the Leeward side. Very nasty area there
The Windward side might have some riding south of Kailua

Maui has riding up high in the center of the island or on the Windward side but I have just got a MTB at the hotel in Kihei and cruise next to the ocean. You might try the Hawaii section of eMpTyBeeR but it's not very active last time I checked.

Look into riding down the Haleakala Skyline Ridge Trail....I haven'tt done it myself but a friend has and he said he was pleasantly surprised. He rented a Giant FS from some rental shop and had his wife shuttle him up to the park entrance. The rental shops can't go into the parks anymore which is what they start outside the park. This is NOT the road ride that you see advertised all over the island. It's a volcanic rock/dirt ride and ends up back in town down below.

My wife and I did the Skyline Ridge ride in 2010. It was a blast, but the kind where my wife rode it too if you get what I mean. There a TR on here, just search for Maui, skyline. I recently have heard that there are regulation trails in and around Mawakao. You probably need a local lead out since all that stuff is private and expensive land. Check the LBS there in Mawakao. I also saw a bike park there.... BTW, the General Store in Mawakoa has the best deli sandwiches served up by pretty locals.
