Save “Tunnels” and Del Mar Mesa Trails– Send your comments now!
DEADLINE FOR WRITTEN COMMENTS is OCTOBER 14, 2008

The public comment period for the Carmel Mountain and Del Mar Mesa Preserves Resource Management Plan (RMP) ends this Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2008. This plan threatens to close “Tunnels” and other trails on Del Mar Mesa and in Deer Canyon. If you want your comments to count, YOU MUST ACT NOW!
The SDMBA and MTC have researched and consulted with trail users and land managers and have produced a solid trail plan proposal based on these key elements.

* Restricted access to environmentally sensitive areas
* Eliminate redundant trails and reduce the width of trails to provide more habitat
* Utilize loops to lessen concentrated presence of trail users
* Include connectivity to other trail systems
* Keep only sustainable trails to prevent erosion and reduce required maintenance

We want the City and governing agencies to adopt our proposed trail plan.
We fear that closing most or all of the area will result in the proliferation of illegal trails and abuse of the land. By allowing an appropriate level of pubic access, they will encourage and foster responsible stewardship and lessen the presence of threats to the environment.
If you agree, take a few minutes now and let the city know you support this Trail Plan proposed by SDMBA and MTC.
You only have until Tuesday, October 14, 2008.

Please forward this message to other concerned trail users of Del Mar Mesa and Penasquitos Canyon. Please ensure excellent trail etiquette by mountain bikers this week (as always) because agency staff will be walking the area. Anything that will proactively demonstrate stewardship should be done now!
