Went for a solo excursion today at Daley Ranch. It was surprisingly cool and breezy until about 11 am, then it started baking. Started at the Cougar Pass trailhead and proceeded up up and away. Hit Rock Ridge, Crest, Sage, Diamondback, Sage, Stanley Peak, Jack Meadow, Cardiac, Burnt Mountain, Bobcat, and Cougar Ridge (that name cracks me up) for the blazefest back to the truck.

The odd thing that happened on this ride was a helicopter was buzzing and landed several times in the meadow north of Stanley Peak. I happened to be climbing up Stanley Peak when this chopper came in for the kill. I felt like a freaking Viet cong running for cover! :ninja: :ninja: JK. Anyway, it was weird, I'm not quite sure what this pilot was up to. He landed a cuople times in the grass, hovered over a tree at some pretty weird pitches close to the ground. I thought he might clip something and crash actually. I took a few photos, maybe one of you knows?

Last photo is the obligatory dirty leg shot.

Went to Stone and got 2 growlers of Smoked Indian (IPA and Smoked Porter, yummy!). I'll bring at least one tomorrow to La Costa.

Sounds like a hella long ride you went on today Mike...any idea of your total elevation gain and mileage?
Sweet shots man!
Now, if I were a paranoid person, I would say that was a CIA choppa..
If I were a realist, I could come up with a few other variables..like...
..Practice..
..Lost..
If I were just silly I would say..
..Searching for the elusive chupacabra..
..Investigation future oil well sites..
..Searching for Osama Bin Laden..
..Geraldo Rivera finally found where Hoffa is burried..

Great TR Mike!!

Thanks RHS. The mileage was a bit over 18 and the elevation gain not sure but it was quite a bit. My Garmin 205 doesn't seem to show total elavation gain but maybe I'm missing something?

I think the practice idea is correct. That guy was pretty sketchy and I guess he figured if he piled it, it would be in a field as opposed to a subdivision or something. Those things are super dangerous with all that weight and spinning metal with mega inertia!

Wow great shots, that heli is intense and I would guess he was practicing as well. Looks like a pretty cool ride I don't know if I would do that well uphill too much though.

Man that's awesome I was just talking to a friend who mentioned Smoke Indian, he told me his friend worked at the brewery and I figured it was special only but man that sounds really nice(as I sip on a Stone pale ale) Anyways good shots once again thanks for the report!

How long is La costa? i have been wanting to try it out since I saw the shots of Nascar, I think that was the name I saw....with the drops and such, anyways what time are you guys going and where do you meet usually? I'm surfing til around 12 I would imagine but maybe I can make it up to la costa if the time is right. See ya!

Nice pictures Mike, that helicopter looks like a toy one from far away, I've seen the same thing happening at Sycamore Canyon, I guess they like to practice. For a real cool one to see is the Navy Seals training, I've seen them on the bay, they have 2 to 4 guys hanging from a line and fly over the Coronado Bridge then drop down to almost touch the water and is that not enough they go up and down several times, nice to see it but I will probably be crying like a little girl if I was one of those guys :crying:
