Anybody out there run tire inserts? I am mulling over experimenting with a set of Rimpact inserts to improve grip (to compensate for my terrible cornering technique) and to smooth out the trail a little (to compensate for my terrible line choice). Protecting my very fancy/expensive rims is a plus too.

Based on the article below, I was thinking maybe trying out the Rimpact original/pro for my front/rear tires.

Does anybody out there run inserts? Those of you who ride with me know I'm not a hard charger, but I tend to resort to the classic point-and-pray technique.

thanks!

what pressure do you run and what pressure do you want to run?

I already run fairly low pressures (13-14 psi up front, 15 rear) due to my largish tires (2.6"). From what I understand, the advantage of inserts is not merely to run lower pressures... it's the rim protection and the additional support and traction that the insert gives to the tire. Certainly these benefits become more apparent at lower pressures, but I think I'm already at fairly low pressures.

I don't have any immediate plans to lower my pressure further if I go w/ inserts. However, I'm definitely interested in the experience of others.

I have ran the inserts to make your tires tubeless they take up a lot of room make the tire harder to stay on. I have run the inserts that are hard surgical tubes and they made the ride very rough. I believe you might have rim protection but the lower air volume will affect your ride. I believe if you buy a really stiff tire would be a better idea.I add a tube when I think a tire isn’t stable.

Wow, you are running them pretty low. I'm usually 18-19 front / 20-21 rear with no inserts. Never had any rim problems. They never fold, so an insert probably wouldn't help me personally. With your pressures, maybe. But if you're not deforming/folding the tire in hard cornering, I'd think you don't need to add them. It'd be more rotational weight. And I don't think you have much risk of ruining a rim.

I like Tom's suggestion of tires with a beefier sidewall (if I'm reading that right).

Shit, look at RHS. He's been running approximately 3 to 7 PSI for the last 15 years with no inserts.

^^^ Wow, I knew RHS was an advocate of low pressure, but not that low. I have always run lower than most, based on his advice and my experimentation, but I’m relatively light. I didn’t check mine for a few rides and found them at 8 front / 11 rear recently with no noticeable negative effect, but my usual is 13/16. My current e-MTB tires are heavy duty 2.8”, so no need or desire to f*ck around with inserts. I haven’t had a real flat in many years since going tubeless. I re-juice ‘em every three months and don’t bother carrying a heavy tube anymore except on backcountry rides. I do carry patches, boots & bacon strips, links & a hanger always though.
