I was thinking about grabbing a cheap BMX bike to play around with in the back yard or on the street whenever I have a short window of time. I'm hoping it can help me develop some technical skills (ok, you can stop laughing now). I've been looking on Craigslist but finding a cheap non-kids bike is surprisingly difficult.

Anybody out there have an old BMX bike they can let me borrow for a bit to see if this new idea sticks? Or maybe one you're willing to sell on the cheap?

Oh yeah? I don't know about that!

That Redline PL26 on Amazon looks like a lot of fun actually.

Not sure how much of a thing they are today, but up till about 15 years of age, I always loved having a freestyle bike (basically a heavier/stronger bmx bike, but with a front brake, gyro cable detangler and some front and rear pegs). Tricks are for kids. So fun. Do it!

I've been thinking of doing the same thing. While I have a vintage Mongoose, I'm worried my fat ads might brake it.

New bmx are so different from the old bikes. I stood over a 22" wheel bmx and felt it was to big, a 24 or 26, would be huge. Go with a 20" wheel and feel like a kid again.

Here's a new Haro (based in San Marcos) that has 21" top tube. $479 list

Here's a Fit Bike (based on OC) 21.25 top tube $359

I've been thinking I want a 21.5" TT, but the frames start at $300-400, then a build ends up being $1000+.

Check with Omega Bicycles in Oceanside for new, and Mark could probably point you to some good local used ones too.

26 is definitely not huge. I like riding my 26 better than my 20 that's for sure. I currently have a 20, 24, 26, and 29 bmx. Wife has a 24, and I bought her a PL26 when they were on deeper sale recently on Amazon. $320 was too cheap to pass up.

Damn.. now i'm really pondering. Been considering getting the budding mtb rider in the family a cheaper, but fun and easy-to-ride bike to cruise around town so I don't have to stress about theft when pedaling out to grab a bite and/or a cool beverage ...and I could ride it too... giggity!

Be careful looking around at 26" and up BMX bikes, it is a deep rabbit hole and your wallet is not safe. Lemme help ruin you a little bit with just a thin slice of what is out there....

So what is your favorite size and why?

Depends on what we are doing. For just cruising around I like the 29, its a big goofy bike. For fun the 24" is probably my favorite. 20" is too small to me, but the one I have is more of a collectible at this point. The 26" is a good all around bike. You can put the seatpost up and do some distance without it looking like a crackhead bike, but you can still toss it around like a bmx bike also.
