Any idea who hacked up most of the upper section Barrels trail? Wish I would have taken pictures. I almost ate it on the way down because of brush thrown on the upper section of the trail. I know it was done sometime last week. It looks horrible.

Wasn't this also a problem last year? Wonder if it's the same guy.

There are some positive things happening with MTRP and any activity like this will not help.
If anyone knows who is doing the cutting, brushing back, trail building, please ask them to stop.
The park staff is on this and anything like this happening will just be more ammo for them.

I don't think it is the same guy as last year, but it really does need to stop.

I get that it is well intended--trying to improve sight lines and keep people on the trail. That is not being questioned.

The problem is that to the city and wildlife agencies, it all just looks like "trail building," which cannot be done in East Elliot until the Master Plan Update (MPU) is approved.

We have an uneasy truce right now that is preventing further trail closures. Anything that looks like trail building or suggests that the City is not in control of the area risks shattering this fragile truce.

I am not defending the City's characterization of what is going on. As a pragmatist, I'm just letting you know how they see it and what all the stakes are.

So if you want to keep riding in East Elliot until we can get the MPU approved and some new trails in place, please try to keep a lid on things by telling whoever is doing the trailwork to kindly cease and desist.

Haven't been out there lately but if this is on upper barrels*, it's on USMC property. We really don't want the Marines getting involved - again. The risk there is they'll start patrolling and ticketing again, and they're not someone you can really argue with.

*only the lower 1/2 of 3 barrels is in the City's East Elliott expansion area.

It's been ages since I've been out there, but I seriously hope you find out who is doing this, especially if it's on USMC land.

They should should be discouraged, if sighted, in the strongest terms that whoever sees them feels capable of expressing. So to speak.
