Hey fellow bikepacking adventurers!

My coworker is getting a custom build around a Surly Ogre frame and has the itch to start planning routes for his bikepacking adventures. He will be joining this thread soon.

We both make maps at work and he used a KML I had of the Julian Death March route, plus some other roads, fireroads, etc to put together this nice looking map.

I have posted up on my blog about bike packing planning to keep me motivated to actually get out and bikepack in the first quarter of 2012.

I've thought of that too. But what would really be neat is to be able to bike a trail deep into the mtns where we can camp by a trout filled lake or stream. Gotta find some legal trails in the sierras to do that!

I saw three bike packers on Mtn bikes in Bonita this morning, looks like they were trying to figure out where to go. I was a passenger in a car so I couldn't stop. Have you checked out the new mtbr forum?

Thanks for sharing, Dan. Lately, I've been thinking about bikepacking and was reading up on some of evdog's and Gabe's ride reports in our local mountains. I've never bikepacked, so I think I'm going to try and get my feet wet come this spring and do some baby stepping. Maybe repeat Evan's route that he did here (http://forums.mtbr.com/bikepacking-bike-expedition/rr-quickie-overnighter-863604.html), just to see if I like it, then maybe tackle some longer routes from there.

Shoot man. Zombie thread. I haven't even been on DT in two years! Thanks for reeling me back in. Bikepacking would be awesome to do this spring. You guys may get me pumped enough to actually get some bags and hit the trail for a 24O.

Reviving an old thread. There are lots of bikepacking TR’s by evdog on DT, and two by me. I’m planning to be an April fool next weekend and do another desert bikepack, short on mileage and high on landscape and whiskey. I’m taking an old bike and the exact same setup I’ve used before, since it worked so well. Thought I’d share my setup on the slim chance someone might be interested. Have fun Dan! That's a handy chart. For a sec there, I read "snakes" and wondered what the hell you were thinking transporting snakes. I then realized "snacks" makes a hell of a lot more sense. I suspect I'd add a pair of readers to this list.

Yeah, probably more tents than usual for Queens Ransom as there was some rain in the forecast for the first two days. We got a few showers the first day and night but fortunately that was it. There was a good mix of bivy sacks, tarps and tents in use. Probably a couple people still cowboy camping as well. I tend to bring a stove on short trips like this. Throwing in a stove and a couple backpacker meals just simplifies things. Just pick up snacks along the way and you're set. AZT was different because there were plenty of restaurants and places to resupply food along the way, but not necessarily backpacker stove friendly food. So it wasn't really worth bringing a stove. I did bring one on the Colorado trail but didn't plan on using it until after Buena Vista where there is a 200 mile stretch with no resupply. Picked up a fuel canister and some backpack meals on the way through town, which worked out well.
