Found this on MTBR, this just made my FS 29er decision that much harder and here I was looking at bikes w/ gears.

Its all about priorities!

A full-sus single speed defeats the whole purpose of having a single speed...simplicity. Either man up and mash gears or go back to a ss hardtail like the rest of the camp.

What's not simple about that? You dont' have to screw w/ the rear shock EVER! Plus if your bike is missing this:

it is 99% simpler than a bike w/ one.

Let me look in the single speed handbook and see what the requirements are for a singlespeed. Oh yea that's right there are no rules, as long as it has ONE gear it is a SS.

That bike doesn't appear to have a chain tensioner. How do you deal with chain growth that I assume you'd get with rear suspension?

Bingo! Virtual or actual pivot must be the centerline of the bottom bracket.

Well if simplicity isn't a requirement, then pickup a cheap Demo 9 for $1k and throw a single gear on the back.

It has to do with where the suspension is located. The rear end pivots around the BB so the chain length remains constant.
