After todays ride Woody showed me an awesome mexican place in San Capistrano. Awesome food, and there is a good store in the mall that sells the full selection of Stone beers plus a great selection of Belgian beers (and strangely not much else beer-wise). I can't recall the name but when you cross I-5 west on Ortega turn left at the T-intersection and its in a strip mall on the right a few blocks down. I will probably not be going to Pedro's anymore

They had two Unibroue beers I have never seen before.

^^^Love me some Belgians!

If anyone wants to sample Unibroue selections, Trader Joes sometimes carries "taster packs" with 4 x 12-oz bottles for $8. I have seen 2 different offerings, one with:

Le Fin Du Monde
Maudite
Trois Pistoles
Don De Dieu

(my faves) and another with:

Ephemere
Blanche de Chambly
Raftman
Chambly Noire

You'd better like hops & bitterness with this one.

That sounds like something I'd enjoy. Have you tried Green Flash's Hop Head Red? If so, are the two brews at all alike?

If I've tried that, I've since killed off whatever brain cells would've allowed me to remember it.

I get the sense from reading Beeradvocate that the Hop Head Red is more balanced with hops & malts, and not as bitter as the Tongue Buckler. Either way I don't think you can go wrong if you're a hop-lover.

Terrible thing, having to stomach these San Diego beers, no?

OK, now trying a Jolly Pumpkin Maracaibo Especial. In a few words: really, really good, but different.

It's listed on the board as a Belgian Strong Dark Ale, but IMO it is really not that style. There are Belgian yeasts noticeable but also a mix of fruits and spices that I really can't pinpoint. Really complex but a distinct departure from what you'd expect from a strong Belgian. Not really a sour, either.

BTW I'm at Pizza Port in O.B., sort of my office between work and home. Awesome beer selection.

Sadly I lived a few blocks away from there but moved to mission valley last month. Awesome place. Have you been to Olive tree market at Sunset Cliffs and Naraganssett? They have a tasting room open Th-Sat with awesome beers. Will be going this weekend for sure...

Tonights brew...

Nice! One of the best red ales hands down. Did you get it at BP or a bottle shop?

Had it on tap last night at O.B. Pizza Port, but have bought it at BevMo in the past. I should swing by BP by my work and get a few bottles (or a growler if they're filling).
