Don't do it. You need to learn to pick good lines and read the trail. Full suspentions let you get sloppy. I have been teaching my children about picking lines since they could ride and while some of my kids are more inclined than others, my six year old rides a 20" trek that I got off craigslist (and upgraded a bit) at Dailey and areas of PQ that will not be named and is smooth over all the ruts and rocks. Sometimes he picks a line that makes my butt tight but he can usually recover it. He is a strong rider and while I am sure he would be faster on a FS I am glad he is learning the right way, slow and steady. Also what I mean by talking to them about picking lines is when we go hiking I point out the sand and rocks and ruts and show them where I would ride my bike through and show them the tire tracks, and even point out when you see that someone picked a bad line and rolled into a bush. Start small and teach him, he will have plenty of time to ride full suspentions and go fast.... unless you are going to TW or something then my ramblings are moot and you should go FS.

He's actually still too small for a 24" bike but I was just shopping early for a full sus bike.
Hope he gets better so he can join me on the trails too :)

I have a 24" Haro hard tail my kids used to ride Mammoth on as well as local trails too of course. $50.00 its yours. It has a new frame because my kid snapped the original and Haro replaced with no questions. The problem with the small FS bikes is the kid is too lite and will just bounce around like a pogo stick.

i had a hard time finding anything worth the money when i was shopping for junior's bike...ended up building it from the frame up for him.
it came out much better than we expected...and cheaper too....the build spec beats 75% of all the bikes out there, adults included.

It's an Iron Horse Yukuza Aniki, for a "kids" bike, it's a beast of a bike, unless you plan on taking your kid on shuttle runs, you're better off getting a hard tail till they get a little older. MBfish's kid has a Yakuza, he loves it on the downhill, but curses his Dad on anything flat or uphill.

Here's MBFish's boy sending his Yakuza in Big Bear a couple years ago.

he's right about it being a beast of a bike...but that fork on his pic is also about 85 lbs.
the stock build (Spinner Ammo fork, heavy wheels and heavy crankset) is ridiculous. I just bought the frame and used all high end lightweight components. junior has no difficulty whatsoever pedaling it, but then again we dont do any excessive climbing, mostly daley ranch and a few other local trails.
i'm not sure what the weight is on mine, but i woudl guess between 30-36 lbs...which is defintely heavy for a kid, but when you see the punishment they put their bikes thru, it is reassuring to know the bike will hold up to their abuse.

He's since changed the fork, he wasn't able to get more than an inch of travel out of the original fork, no matter how hard he tried. That day at Bear the guy loading bikes on the lift gave him a hard time for exceeding the 38 lb limit, you'd have to be heartless to tell a 9 year old that you can't go riding with your dad cause your bike's too heavy.
