Today I picked up the full Shimano shop brake bleeding kit. When I picked it up at the LBS they told me it had everything in it I needed, including the oil.

Well, it has every piece of hardware I need but no oil.

Other than the red dye and the price; is there any difference between mineral oil I can buy at CVS or somewhere similar and the mineral oil Shimano sells?

Don't use the drug store stuff way to thick. But I'm still trying to find a substitute that isn't near the the same price as gold.

Looks like you can use Pentosin CHF 7.1 which is the power steering fluid used in my BMW ans is readily available at any BMW dealer for about 12.00. Which is 1/3 the cost of the Shimano oil.

My guess is it can be blought at a auto parts store for less than that since it won't say "BMW" and be in the famous BMW silver/gray packaging.

Interesting. I used regular mineral oil and it seems to work great.
As a matter of fact I'm switching out my XX brakes for a set of
XT brakes using the regular mineral oil.

technical part of oil is the viscosity!
What is Viscosity?
Viscosity, by definition, is an oil’s resistance to flow and shear. It is the single most critical physical property of the oil as it affects both the wear rate and the fuel efficiency.

Water is a low viscosity fluid; syrup is a high viscosity fluid. With oil, like syrup, as you increase the temperature, the viscosity lowers, meaning it flows faster, or more easily.

The most common unit of measure for viscosity is the Kinematic viscosity and this is usually quoted in data sheets at 40°C and 100°C. The commonly used unit of measure is centistokes but the correct SI unit of measure is mm2/s.

Kinematic Viscosity is a measure of the fluids resistance to flow and shear under the forces of gravity, or how easily the oil flows to the different parts of the engine.

What defines an oil’s Viscosity?
The oil’s viscosity is defined in the main by the size of the molecules. The larger the molecule structures, the thicker, or higher, or heavier the viscosity.

The size and structure of mineral oil molecules vary, so the average molecule size dictates the viscosity, whereas the synthetic oil manufacturing process results in consistently sized molecules of an identical structure.

As mineral oil ages, the molecular size and structure changes and hence, the resulting changes in viscosity over the service life of the oil.

Carbon frame, carbon bars, carbon ...... But this damn mineral oil for probably the most important part of my bike is too pricey. Am I all about show or what? Fuck performance, I look gooood

The question is, did the LBS divy up the oil that was supposed to be included in the kit?
Some LBS are notorious for taking out stuff from packaging and reselling them.

Screw the price, man. Buy the 1-litre jug.
I did...

I do my own wrenching and preventative stuff like 6 month full flush and bleed. PLUS, mineral oil, no WAIT, SHIMANO mineral oil is great for applying over carbon stuff for the sheen and luster. If the bike looks good, it must ride good. That's my mantra. Tell Belizean to shut his trap, skip a day of riding and rub some oil on them carbon rims just not on the carbon handlebar. It's too subtle of a part to detail.

You're just jealous because you're carbon deficient. Here's a warm glass of milk to sooth you down this balmy Mineral Monday.

Let me reel you in there big fish; splurge on carbon and skimp on mineral oil, common man. I'm not even gonna address jealousy; common man. Real happy with my rig playah...

Look at one application of mineral oil on carbon could do... luster and shine
