Welcome! I have to agree with what the others have said. A few more rides and maybe some padded bike shorts and you'll be good to go. I was having the same problem when I first started.

where should i go for some padded bike shorts. i went on another ride again today(a much shorter one probably about 2 or 3 miles since my legs started burning real good a lot faster today)

i think im just gonna ride around on flat ground and get used to pedaling for longer periods of time to see if it will build endurance and then move to tackling hills.

I would check http://www.chainlove.com for a good deal on mountain bike shorts. They only put up one item at a time, but they're usually anywhere from 50 to 80% off. Just check back often, I got a good pair for really cheap off there. Just make sure they come with a liner.

There's also another website with the same type of setup called http://www.bonktown.com that sells road bike specific stuff. You could get a pair of padded lycra shorts off there and throw them on under a pair of shorts you already have. They're pretty much the same thing as the mtb short liners.

Welcome, and congratulations on making a positive change with enthusiasm! Yes, the padded shorts will help, and, since you're on a budget, maybe you can find some on sale at Performance Bike or REI. Also, gloves with full fingers are nice when you fall. It's hard to tell from the photo, cuz the bike's leaning some, but maybe your bike seat needs to be adjusted a little. The nose should be level or pointing up slightly, definitely not down. Ask somebody, or the Trek shop, and make sure the height is right -- your legs and knees will feel better. Knee should be just slightly bent at bottom of pedal stroke. Just simple pointers, but might help if the bike shop didn't spend much, or any, time fitting the bike to you.

Hey, welcome to DT! Check chainlove.com frequently. They have deal updates every half hour and shorts, among other things, come up regularly.

thanks for the advice. i do have the height set correctly(something my uncle taught me when i younger that i still remember) i am definitely gonna tilt the seat back a hair to see how it rides for me tomorrow.

Welcome! Bummer about your DUI, but glad it put you in the direction of mountain biking. Same thing happened with me and I've loved mountain biking for over 2 years now! DT is a great place to get you stoked on riding.

I either always make sure I have a designated driver or I just don't drink. It's not worth it and the company is great even if you're not drinking. :)

welcome.

for butt relief i'll have to agree with the chainlove.com suggestion, as well as performance or rei if you just want to get a pair of lycra cycling shorts to put under regular shorts. dickies shorts are tough as nails and can be had at walmart for cheap. won't be as comfy for longer rides as dedicated bike shorts, but work just fine. for hot summer days swim trunks over the lycra work too.

hope to see you around.

Just don't wear a speedo over cut-down lycra like jSatch does -- that's his signature look.
