Finding myself in Palm Desert with my noble steed in my car and a couple of cold ones on ice I decided to ride up the Goat Trails system. Now looking up at the hill and a rather sparse trail head in 101 degree heat might not have been the most inviting or wise thing I've ever done but it never stopped me before nor did it work this time. Grabbed a frosty and headed upwards via the fireroad Stopping to get my breath and carefully placing my lungs back inside my fat stomach, the views were starting to make the payoff count. Here's another view of the valley below Pulling into the corral I decided to tie up my steed and sip on a cold Sarsaparilla that I wisely placed in my pack I continued to climb and now the fun started. After you get most of the way up the hill it opens up to a bunch of single track options where you can loop them together for some mileage and challenge yourself dropping down some of the more chunky sections. It started to get dark as the sun dropped below the top of the mountain and I was looking froward to grabbing that cold one back at the car Not having a real light on the lid or in my pack I turned and headed downward. What a blast it was since I can't remember moving the pedals all the way down. Took every little ST trail I could find and rolled down to the car parked at Vons and was ready to grab that last cold one. Right about here is where the bad and stupid kicks in. As I was fumbling for the keys which I put in my pack, they were no longer there and must have fallen out somewhere on the trail. Now having one of those fancy euro key fob cars life gets a bit complicated now. Checking Google maps I thought I was in luck since there was a MB dealer just one mile down the road so I geared up and head northbound. Finding they were closed I headed back to call AAA and see what magic they could perform. After 45 minutes they came out and we decided the best option would be to leave the car right and there and deal with it in the morning. So... geared up again, zip tied a light to my helmet for a leisurely 9 mile ride back to the hotel. In the morning I called and found out that a new fancy smancy key fob wouldn't be in my hands for two days so option B kicks in. Called Enterprise to rent a car, drive all the way home, grab the spare fob, drive all the way back to PS, grab my car and drive home again.. The bottom line: New Key fob- $246.25 and two days wait Enterprise rental car- $37.80 & 5 hours drive time round trip Riding Goat trails- Priceless |

Great report Mike, and I'm glad the troubles happened (sucks that it did happen) at the end-of-ride and you were able to enjoy your adventure beforehand! Nice Pivot, btw!! My pack(s) has one of those clippy things inside, and I convinced myself long ago to always use it even though it's a p.i.t.a. and seems redundant - I just know the same thing would happen to me if I didn't 'cause my luck rolls like that... |

Can't say how many times I have had the "are my keys there" moment. 101? That was "brave". Great report. Happy to hear it ended well. Nothing better than the Palm Dessert drive twice in a day. |

Wow, Mike! Great story, well worth the $300 that it cost you! Did you even consider option C: with your makeshift light strapped on, you could've re-traced your route on the trails and tried to find your keys. Or waited and done so early the next morning when it was light (but before the temps got up to 101 again). That way you might've saved $300, and you would've gotten to ride those priceless trails twice! |

I do the same thing - clip my keys in and grumble that it's probably overkill. Now I won't grumble so much - I'll just think of poor ol' Mike and have a good chuckle at his expense. |

Nothing better than the Palm Dessert drive twice in a day. The heat really wasn't that bad and the shadows cooled it off (or at least it felt like that) BTW, it was three drives in one day... I went over the hill on the final leg just to change it up and look for other riding areas I can screw up in |

The "light" I had was barely enough to get me back to the hotel so using it at night wouldn't have worked. The nightrider 750 was in the car too to make matters worst |

I feel for you. I had that very experience in Mammoth winter before last. Got back from skiing, changed cloths at my locker and down to relocate my car closer to main lodge so I didn't have to worry about the shuttle after the afternoon/evening of hanging with friends. Got to my car… no keys. Back at my locker keys are nowhere to be found. Long story short by the I got a new key over nighter from BMW, had the lock smith let me in the condo and then rekey all the locks at the condo, had the come out and let me in my house when I got home to SD… losing that key cost me about 800.00. Sadly, a week later I found the original key I "lost" inside a sorrel that was in the bottom of my locker. The only place I hadn't bothered, or even thought of to look. |

That incident would never have happened to me....not that I don't lose shit....I misplace/lose stuff on a daily basis. No, the 101 degree heat woulda stopped me right out of the gate. BEFORE the gate. I'm sure I could find a way to lose something big via another means.... |
