Due to our late finish on NUT Day 1 there was not time the previous night to retrieve the van from Lemolo Lake. Not that anyone was in any condition to do that drive regardless. Unfortunatley this left a 2.5hr round trip shuttle retrieval and drop off before we could start today's ride, making for another very late start. As we would still have another 1hr retrieval following the ride plus a ~2hr drive to Oakridge we (being 406, Deno and I) decided to split the group into slow and slower groups so that we could start the retrieval earlier. We headed off while the others were doing final preps for the ride. We left you here on NUT Part 1 Within minutes we were back along the river very picturesque We had read in the Forest Service guide that this section was closed. It looked buff from the highway opposite side of the river, and the sign at the trailhead only advised caution. Buff, it did turn out to be. This rock was begging to be jumped off of There was some sawtooth but not nearly as bad as Part 1. Or, maybe we were granny-gearing it rather than middle-ringing it. I left this spot with black smudges on my arm. A tricky one to get over or under 406 tries to not ride off the edge Deno on another short climb Preparing to start the Panther segment, by far the greenest and most lush. This would be my favorite on the day and second only to the Dread and Terror segment for the whole trail. Tacky, buttery smooth, and dense greenery describe this section It really doesn't get more buff than this Sadly the green colors don't pop for the camera like they do for the eye Ferns All too soon the Panther segment was over. We paused here for a break. Just gorgeous.... We soon climbed above the river and back into forest, a bit more open this time. Another segment, another interpretive sign And more flow... More greenery. I was so often tempted to stop for a picture but had to relent, as each section was no greener or river shot prettier than the 20 we had just ridden past. Deno motors on While not as big as on day 1 the streams & waterfalls were still pretty This will be my new desktop...for now Back along the river I had the same shot but with rider much closer. This one gives much better perspective Deno dodges one of few roots on the trail Apparently asphalt doesn't wash away when the river rises 406 enjoys the afternoon You don't find scenes like this much in socal Or this Or this Or this either And definitely not this Nice view The last segment was 15mi. The profile showed a nasty spike near the middle. But the longer distance threw the scale off and we did much of the climb without knowing it. The HAB to Bob's Butte was a bitch, however. Once at the bottom of that it was a flat out sprint to the end. The whole day it was painful to stop as muscles quickly became cold. I had to stop to smell a few flowers though On any other day..... This ride ended the only way it should have....sore legs and huge smiles We grabbed the van while the others headed in for a meal. Then it was off to Oakridge for some more sweet Oregon dirt. |

The only thing that made it easy narrowing down shots to post is so many are similar....lets see, I have about 25 shots here of buff singletrack through lush forest - pick 2 with riders, 2 without...done. OK, it still wasn't that easy. Can't wait to see everyone else's pics!

Morning came early for Evdog and I as we had to break camp, go retrieve the van at start and drive back down to leave his truck at the finish end. After loading all camping gear, making sandwiches for the trail, and me taking Vicodin to take the edge off yesterday's trauma, we got under way at 11 am once again. Fortunately we rode directly from our campsite, picking up where we left off. The 3.7 mile Calf segment is open despite what the dated Nat’l Forest brouchure states and is in very good shape. Actually the entire NUT was in ouststanding shape except for a couple of deadfalls here and there which is to be expected in the early season. I can’t fathom the amount of hours that goes into maintaining these 80 miles of trail, but it’s some of the best kept trail I’ve seen especially for the minimal amount of traffic we observed. Although we did ride during the week, only a handful of day hikers checking out falls and two through hikers were met, but not a single bike. After a brief climb, we’re enjoying the view of the river below. Most of this section burned in the 2002 Apple Fire and was closed for a number of years. As far as I can tell from MTBR, this was reopened by the 2008 timeframe. More falls on the other side of the river And the scenery continues The 5 mile Panther segment might as well be called the jungle segment. The amount of ferns in this section is staggering More mini waterfalls to see The up & down sawtooth pattern isn’t as pronounced as on Deer Leap, but most of us were still hiking up granny gear sections, feeling the effects of the prior day and conserving our energy for the full 30 miles on tap today. It definitely felt like a rain forest at times, both with the vegatation, humidity, and warmer temperatures. The 5.5 mile Mott segment is level for the most part and brings some welcome relief to the climbs. Parts of the trail are along side the river At the end there was a nice stream to take a lunch break. Apparently the fast group who left 15 minutes before us at the start, wasn’t so fast as Stang caught them as they were leaving. The 15.7 mile Tioga segment was the final and longest section. I’m reminded of Jurassic Park here This must be bridge number 167 by now. The first serious climb puts you up on a bluff overlooking the river below Some sections of the trail were a bit muddy at times, but this is again typical in the early season. Cascading falls were still present Then began a second hike-a-bike The result was some nice flowy turns, but this wasn’t the final ascent we were anticipating. James dwarfed by some old growth trees Wild irises and other flowers in bloom Then came the final ascent to Bob Butte which wasn’t going to be ridable at this stage. At least the views were good hiking up Coming down off Bob Butte was your typical in-your-dreams flow. And the waterfalls of Fern Creek We finally make it to Deadline Falls at the Swiftwater trailhead. This was the end of the trail for us While the three stooges retrieved the van, we got our paceline going as we headed 5 miles down the road to the (very small) town of Glide for dinner at a great family restaurant. Today was only 35 miles and 4,400’ of climbing. As I said it was a piece of cake today, and very large one at that, and so was the rhubarb pie a la mode. NUT was an unparalleled riding experience. However, next time I will choose to ride this trail in 3 days and not feel so hurried for mileage. This would allow spending more time to check out a number of other features off trail including Umpqua Hot Springs, Medicine Creek pictographs, and a number of other falls (Susan Creek, Falls Creek, Toketee) and ride the Riverview trail opposite the Mott segment. Overall this was the best epic ride I’ve done to date bar none. |

Can't wait to see everyone else's pics!I have been fortunate to have traveled extensively for work over the past decade, finding time to hike in whatever city or country I am in. I've also had the means to climb, ride and backpack throughout the western half of the US. That said, and knowing that photos can't adequately capture the beauty and grandeur of the places we travel this looks like some of the prettiest singletrack I've ever seen. I guess I know where I'm headed next summer. |

Interested to know how many other trail users you saw in your two days on the NUT? When I was there, for a 3 day Fri-Sun we saw 3 hikers and no bikers. If it was SoCal you would have been stopping every 10 minutes to let someone by. Not only is this a truly epic stretch of singletrack, you are most guaranteed to have it to yourself! |

Monday - 2 through hikers w/ 3 dogs (Dread & Terror segment) - A couple w/ a baby at Columnar Falls (Hot Springs segment) - One old geezer just coming across the bridge to the Hot Springs (couldn' confirm if he was a trucker) - Another couple and past the Hot Springs out for a day hike Tuesday - One annoying guy on a Huffy camping at Wright Creek - About 4-5 day hikers right at the end of Tioga between Fern Creek Falls There might be a few others I missed but my head is cloudy from McKenzie which had 3-4x more folks on Friday on very similar terrain. Much like PCT, you get people around popular spots/features/trailheads but not much in between. |

You left out the part that Evdog's Mojo didn't come w/ an anti-cramping feature and he had to eat pickles, which is his favorite food. |

Have to ask a few questions - so you guys ride each segment as a point to point type of "shuttle"? Ride from point A to B and then start the next morning at point B and continue to C? Also, you guys mentioned running out of water yet nearly all of your pics show running water. I'm just assuming you didn't bring a filter with you? Is there an easy way to stash food on mile 20 of a 40 mile section of trail? From the BLM pdf it looks like much of the trail parallels highway 138? Also, is this trail comparable to the Deschutes River Trail I've heard a lot about? Better, worse, the same? |
