Most riders that I encounter at Hodges have bells (like I do). I ride slow and easy there. I have only encountered 1 ass that had a DH bike there and he rode like he was the shit on a flat trail(loser).
All other rider and hikers are pretty nice.
Maybe you should ride on the beach. There is never any stress there.

I agree there places to go fast and places to go careful. If you want to go fast on weekends go to Noble Canyon go Anderson truck trail go to Ted Williams. I rode Sycamore today and ran into several multi-rider groups and each one of the riders were mute or didn't speak English, not sure. I would say there are four of us and the other group not a word, what's with that ?

The non English speaking (prejudicial statement) trail users went home saying the same thing about you. "Those guys didn't even say Hola" somebody has to initiate dialogue, treat people the way you want to be treated; if you'd like a hello, then say hello; if no response that's on them.
That said: :) I rode La costa couple days ago and saw a guy that never said a word to me at Calavera, multiple times, I was in front of my group above the new bridges, heading east, it's single file at walking pace in both directions, I didn't speak to him on purpose and the rest of my group got a big "good morning" from him. "fuck that dude" yeah I'm a bitch.

I hear ya. I wasn't talking to every mtb'r on the trails, just the douchebags, they know who they are.

Easily identified by the Moose Knuckle in the front, and the Pooper Pucker in the rear.

I've gotten in the habit of saying, out-loud, "thank-you" whenever another trail user,
of any stripe, yields to me or my group - a little good Karma goes a long way.

Hey JJ... Channel 8 News just did a feature story on *JJ The Whale* - the real one!
I never knew, or didn't remember the story - now I grok your screen-name!

I always ring my bell given to me by (old skool) and most hikers/walkers really thank me and i always tell them how many (riders)are behind me.
please respect the trails and the people on them even if they don't respect you

JJ's right, of course, even though the douchebags are the exception. I spend a significant amount of time on the trails at PQ, Hodges, BLT, Iron Mt. and Woodson, hiking with Scouts now. As a pedestrian, I am about the most bike-friendly hiker there is, believing every trail I hike on should be open to bikes and happy to see riders regardless of whether it is... if they're not idiots.

Two ding-dongs this past Saturday in PQ, both wearing (coincidence?) two-ears worth of headsets. The first was climbing Telephone Poles/Powerline, where my 12 guys are literally single file on the FIRE ROAD on the inside, rutted line. A group of dudes are climbing past us, and we're exchanging hellos and "have a great day" when Racer X passes the climbers by shooting the line between us, 3-feet wide and swerving in front of me to get past. Dude, you're too slow and weak to shoot the outside line? You couldn't afford the time, considering you come across as a complete douche? What if we were Sierra Club pansies and began shrieking in terror? "Just what we need."

Douche 2 was on the riparian singletracks, south of the creek, which are mercifully tamped by rain and have very little of the dust and pulverization from equestrian riders. He's oncoming, he's listening to his iPod and he sees 12 people step-off trail, smile and say Hello to him, but he acts like he can't see us, never even slows and cuts a tight line past us at speed. Brilliant. I hope his Daft Punk makes for a great ride.

Yeah, these things aren't new, but we're all smart enough to be smarter than this.

Does anybody know where I can get those bells that attach with a Velcro strap to my handlebars and have a little magnet to turn them off.

I have this one: http://www.rei.com/product/721998/coghl ... c-silencer

I usually have the magnet on because it makes plenty of noise slightly muffled.

Thank you, I have to go to REI to return some stuff and I will buy a couple of these bells.

The bells with the magnet are also at places like Walmart, in the camping section. They're called "bear bells".

Personally, I don't like my bike sounding like a sleigh. I use the incredibell that requires me to flick it and it's silent when I don't.

If you want to make your bell so it doesn't jingle jangle jingle as you go riding merrily along, but can still be heard by other trail users, take a mallet and give the bell a tap or two at the center of the "x" (see yellow bell above) until edges of the metal just barely come together. With the magnet off, the bell will rattle, but not ring. With the magnet on, the bell is just about completely silent.

I get those really nice two-ding brass bells for all my trail bikes. The sound is just loud enough, and almost musical in quality.

It almost never fails to not only let them know I'm coming up behind them, but it usually gets a smile.
These days, though, my rear Avid Elixir has developed such a squeal that they can't even hear the bell over it, if I apply more than a touch of rear brake when approaching.

I'll try and find some value to your statement

For hikers I yell, good morning hikers, always gets a smile. For horses I yell, get the hell out of the way. For bikers who come flying by me without making a sound, I yell asshole !!
