So this crash above was of course completely harmless, but thanks for starting my hurtlocker post for me Basil!

As many of you know by now, I have been off the bike pretty much since January 17th, the last day of our Tucson trip where I crashed badly on the 50 year trail - well, that rock I was trying to roll/jump wasn't really on the trail I guess (link to evdog's TR). Here is a sequence of how the rock should be done - Duncan was our local trail guide that day. He also had a spare elastic bandage for me to support my wrist after te crash - very cool!)
Image

I had already cleaned the line to the left, so I didn't think this one could be that much more difficult

Image

- boy was I wrong.

Evan got video of me just until the crucial gap jump

With the jump I had way too much speed when I hit the sand pit at the bottom and went OTB hard. To fast to think about tuck and roll. With hands stretched forward reflexively I got what I asked for I guess.
I knew right away that this was not going to be good, but didn't quite expect to be off the bike this long.

I went to urgent care in San Diego the next day. The tip of my radius was pretty much in pieces, but as luck would have it, those 4-5 pieces were pretty much each in the right place and the docs conclusion was that this would heal just fine with a cast for a few weeks. (actually the most painful was his comment "not that you're older this will take a little longer to heal")

here is x rays from that initial visit

Image

two days later I saw a hand specialist who had a CT scan done in addition to the x-rays. I got carried away a bit with the electronic version of the CT scan, but I figure, since Basil and Robo have been waiting and complaining so long for lack of evidence of my broken wrist, here you go:

3D version

zooming through in three directions:

Well, the CT scan didn't really affect the therapeutic strategy, which remained to be a cast for 8 weeks...

After four weeks I had a follow-up X-ray taken, which showed that just that piece of bone that made up 1/3 of the joint interface had shifted and now surgery was deemed the best way forward.

Image

two day later surgery was done and now I have a bionically enhanced wrist

Everything is healing up nicely and just a few days ago I got the ok to try roadbiking

Should be off to my first bike commute in >2 months tomorrow morning!

Shake that stuff off! HTFU! Ok, that 3-dimensional trip through your radius did finally prove to me that you can be off the bike for a bit. But one bone? Pfffff...

No, that really sucks, especially the part about getting two-thirds of the way through and then having to restart the whole healing process. Mentally painful.

We've been missing you, but don't worry, your strength will come back. Your juevos? Not so much. :D

Man, I'm so bummed to hear you ended up needing surgery. But at least now you know that it's going to heal correctly.

So, so true.

Too much time off the bike leads to introspection, so hurry up and get back in the saddle Kreechan!

Impressive injury report Christian.

The surgery was unlucky, but the screws look cool, and the BBQ skewers are a nice touch.

Hopefully Evan has gotten past the tremendous burden of guilt for being at fault for your crash.

Good to hear you will be out riding pavement soon. The DT rehab center is very close by work (Torrey Pines Preserve).

not sure the long time for introspection is what Rob is concerned about - just really knowing the consequences is what will hold me back I think...

but hell, I am still dreaming about riding archipelago this year (even got a suspension fork from Jose to make it easy on the wrist with the singlespeed) - however, as it stands now I am not even sure I would last long enough from just the cardio side of things...

And jeez, in that pic at the top I was not raising arms in a celebratory "touchdown" pose - I was holding onto a branch with one hand so as not to tumble down the hill and, of course, documenting everyone's fails with the other for laughs later.

I've been trying to feel the spiky end of the skewers, but that would not be good, if I could...

Don't blame him. He felt pretty bad for sharing the driving with me on the way home. But I must say, there is nothing like a broken bone to keep you awake on those endless stretches of straight highway in Arizona - whenever I felt like it's time for a brake or at least roll down the window, all I needed to do to be wide awake was twist my arm a little

I thought it was very polite of you not to mention the fact you drove most of the way home. I didn't feel so bad about it at the time after you finished the ride but moreso the next day after hearing the xray results. The alternative of course would have been a quick side trip into the ditch as I was getting very sleepy after 3 solid days of riding and a post ride beer. Good to hear you'll be back on the bike soon!

Nice animated gif's! Hope the healing continues to go well and you can make the arch ride. Your dogs must be happy that you are around more. Don't worry, a few spins up and down Torrey Pines road and you will be back in shape.

Knowing the consequences will hold you back, that is an unfortunate truth.

Coupling that with being off the bike for too long can lead to the introspection I was referring too. Thoughts like "do I really want to keep doing this to myself?" or "maybe I should take up a different sport?" or "I kinda like this road thing, maybe I'll sell my MTB and start shaving my legs".

Like Basil said, we miss you... even if you no longer want to be part of the rigid singlespeed club.

That's an impressive injury report Christian and it's bummer that it is taking longer due to your age  but it's good that it's done right, so there will be no more issues with your wrist movements.

Heal up fast and start all over again, with a little more caution.

Glad to hear you're on the mend. Wrist injuries are relatively easy to recover from, even surgery; it is the mental part that is the hardest but I'm pretty sure you'll be more careful and regardless of that fact progress back to your high skill level. The tradeoff is something like "I like riding so much; is this worth it and who are these vultures waiting for me to crash?" Then the juevos come back naturally but you will always be a touch more cautious, not a bad thing. You riding the Camachos century?
