The bike shop in Hawaii ruined my life...
I've been happy cruising around on my 20 year old Tomassini for, well, the last twenty years. But while on vacation I rented a high end bike with all the carbon this and unobtainium that. SWEET!!!
That whole lever shifting stuff is da' bomb (yeah, I know its been around for some time, but I've never used it before.)
Since I'm an unrepentant MTB racer I can't (don't want to) justify spending 4 or 5k on a new road bike, but I did see that Bikes Direct has some nice carbon road bikes for around 2k.
No bike shops near me so I don't feel bad about ordering on line.
Any thoughts?

I would try to get to a few bike shops and actually ride a few frames in your size before ordering. Online riding is still pretty primitive. Happy shopping!

I've ordered both of my road bikes online. Take the measurements of your current frame and just compare them to a bike you are looking at.

EX: My felt is a 56. The BMC is bought is a 55, but the TT is the same for both bikes. It fits me perfectly.

Which one? I was looking at a few, some seem neat.

Ive had a few friends buy bikes from them, all turned out fine.

It seems like the best idea is to go for the components. Where else can you find a Dura-Ace or SRAM Red specced bike for those prices?

That means breaking your budget by a little, but eh, I don't know, I say go for the parts but then good ole 105 works just fine for me.

So which one you looking at?

I'd pick up a used bike from Craigslist to get a higher end bike for the price range you want to spend...

Since I have no idea what your size is... Not saying all of these are great deals but if they're in good condition odds are you're going to get a much better deal than new.

Just a new bike. I was forced into road work when I was picked up on a MTB team twenty years ago. Now I find its a convience to train on the road when I'm short of time.

The bike arrived today. Tomorrow morning I'll take it out for a spin.
5lbs lighter than my Tomassini.

I just took it for a quick spin, but I need to say I'm very dissapointed.
With all the carbon this, flat blade that and that new fangled shifting I still have to pedal the damn thing.
Who would have thought.....
