I just got my 29er. It's fully rigid. Rode it once at Sycamore. It was great. However, some of the bumps get transfered straight into your lower back. What's the scoop on suspension seatposts (never ridden one). Not worth it because it makes pedaling mushy? Only worth if you get a very expensive one? Must have, even if it's a cheap one? I have carpal tunnel related wrist problems and have been reading up on the subject abit regarding absorbing some Rigid SS shock. There were a few cases on MTBR where someone said switching to a CF handlebar lessened the shock a bit. But that might not have anything to do with your back.... just sharing what little I had to offer  Are there suspension seatposts? I thought there were just drop seatposts. |

I have the Cane Creak (mis-spelling intentional!) Short Travel Thudbuster on my rigid 29er. It has helped a lot to take the edge off the bumps. It creaks like an old rusty chain link gate in a windstorm. This is the noisiest contraption. I can't even hear my Chris King rear hub over the creak-creak-creak. I found that adding lube to the polymer damper in the middle of the linkages does help. The creak seems to come from the polymer rubbing against the linkages and not from the bushings in the linkages themselves. I've never felt any pedal mush. This thing doesn't move much at all since it is the short travel version. Then again, this is on my singlespeed, so I'm usually standing up and not on the seat anyways. I like this much better than a rigid seatpost. If only I could get it to STFU! Edited to add picture. You can sorta-barely see the ST turd-thruster just under the seat on the bike on the right:

For example, there are some on JensonUSA (notably by Cane Creek) that are highly rated but pricey. |

Cane creek thudbuster short travel ONLY. It travels diagonal and back (more anatomical movement) then the traditional vertical bounce ones. |

The reason I even bought a full suspension bike in the first place was because of my back. On a hard tail your legs are your shock absorbers. Basically, I found that for your wrist you need a front shock and for your back you need a rear shock. Otherwise I had to stand up all the time. I have a 27.2 seat post shock, if that might help you. P.M. if you want to try it out. I gave away my last rigid bike. This is just what I experienced. |

I had a thudbuster on a HT I had back in the day, because the roots in South Carolina were killing my back. It worked better than I could have ever imagined, highly recommended. |

I just switched from an aluminum racing machine as my SS (for back and old age reasons as well) to a heavy steel niner and I have to say the steel is way more cushy, I know replacing your frame is probably the last thing on your mind but if you want some extra give, geometery and frame material make a difference. Also that is just part of the HT/rigid thing, you have to pick better/less bumpy lines, stand up at take the rough stuff, and when you get too old to ride rigid get more and more suspention. I love the bike I am selling off, but I know I don't have the back to ride it anymore.... that's life. I have tried some suspention seatposts and hate them. I have not tried the thudbuster, it sounds like people like them, it is ugly though. I would ride it more and see if your style changes and you just get used to it. |
