how you like the bars?

Nice Jose. Did you try that 20T yet. Let me know how it goes. :thumbsup:

32-18 isn't bad. i can roll up most of what i attempt. martha's is tough, but i have a time on the gearie.

I am still trying to wieght the +/- of the KHS Solo One, Redline Monocog and the Haro Mary in terms of upgradability to 1x9, suspension fork and disc brake. Any insight from others would be appreciated.

Brian...When we talked at Calavera I mentioned the KHS Solo One at North of the Border that I was looking at. You mentioned the benefits of the EBB and the higher grade components on the Mary. So where did you get it at and for how much? I want to find somewhere in NC where I can take a Mary for a parking lot spin.

So I've been really digging the whole SS thing and have been riding the crap out of my old XC bike that I recently converted (pics earlier in thread). But after a couple times down NASCAR on a 2" elastomer fork and super narrow XC bars, I decided it was time for something bigger... I haven't taken it down NASCAR yet, but it climbed Daley like a goat.

Any insight from others would be appreciated. I got a 08 Monocog and immediately upgraded the headset (put a Chris King on it), put a Reba on it, and switched to disc brakes. It's probably the heaviest of the three but bomb-proof. Here's me on the Monocog blasting an "epic" jump at Calavera.

Any insight from others would be appreciated. I had it narrowed down to the Monocog Flight, the Mary, and the Raleigh XXIX. All are fairly similar in their materials and component spec but I decided on the Mary based on the On-One bars, the Nevegals, and the EBB. The only advise I can give and it's JMO, is if you're set on making significant upgrades (especially brakes) seriously consider buying the "upgraded" version out of the gate. Bikes already spec'd with disk brakes come with either an EBB or sliders so you can make chain adjustments independent of brake adjustments. Bikes with "V" brakes typically come with track ends and disk brake tabs and are generally spec'd with cheaper components. I bought my Mary sight unseen (special order) from Mark at Bicylcle Warehouse. He gave me a really good deal and Haro is just over in Vista if anything were to go wrong.

Just make sure you get one where the geometry is designed so you can put a suspension fork on it. My rigid XXIX is fun for a while, but the hands start to hurt if I ride much beyond 2 hours. I'm also considering a 22-tooth rear cog, but I mostly just ride it to school. The WTB Exiwolfs are not great. Two bottle cages on a Small frame 29'er is wishful thinking: 16 oz bottles only!

I finally remembered to stop pedalling my SS and take a picture. I've been meaning to do this for months, but when I get on this bike I just want to ride forever! Here's my 20" Haro Mary. I've had her about 2 years now. She started out life as an SS very briefly, then I put a Rohloff speedhub on her for a year. Once I tired of that experiment, she went back to a SS with upgraded wheels and bars. Mary still has the original fork, seatpost, seat, cranks. Upgrades: Wheels: Chris King hubs, Stans Flow 29er rims, Schwalbe Racing Ralph 2.25 Bars: Groovy Love Handles (my favorite bars) Brakes: BB7s Rings: Surly Stainless chainring, CK SS cog (32x20), Salsa Ringdinger guard This is my go-to bike. I take out the geared Ventana El Rey when my buddies want to hit more hills than my bird-legs can handle on the SS. But if it's somewhere I can ride Mary, that's the bike I choose. This is the bike for Cuyamaca, Sycamore, PQ, Hodges, anyplace that's a fun rolling singletrack. I've had many bikes, but I've never had one so perfectly balanced for climbing out of the saddle. My legs give out before the tires start spinning. She's a true mountain goat.

Here's version 2 of my single speed. Took the cranks and wheels off the old one and got some really good deals on the rest of the stuff (thanks to 6packguy). I had a Vanilla on it but the steer stube was short by almost half an inch, so that went to my bro and I picked up a Laurin for it.
